We then propose a carer and arrange an introduction before anything is committed. If it does not feel right to the family or the person themselves, we say so plainly and look again. Placements are supervised locally, with regular reviews and a familiar voice at the end of the phone whenever something needs discussing.

Live-in care is charged at a weekly rate, currently from £1,000 per week depending on the level of support required. Everything is confirmed clearly and in writing before care begins and there are no hidden charges. For couples, one carer can often support both people, which makes it considerably more economical than two residential places.
How does live-in care compare with a care home in Wiltshire?
Weekly costs are often broadly comparable to a residential placement in the county, but the experience is very different. Live-in care is one-to-one rather than shared across a staff rota, it keeps someone in the home and community they know, and it avoids the upheaval of a move, which is frequently the hardest part of the whole process for older people.

Is funding available for live-in care?
It can be. Wiltshire Council can carry out a free needs assessment and may arrange funding or a direct payment where someone is eligible. Attendance Allowance is not means tested and is not affected by savings, and NHS Continuing Healthcare may apply where needs are primarily health related. We are happy to point you toward all of these.
What are the practical requirements at home?
A live-in carer needs a private bedroom of their own, somewhere to keep their belongings, access to bathroom and kitchen facilities and wifi where possible. Every placement also includes agreed daily break time and planned cover for holidays, arranged in advance with a carer who has ideally already met the household.
